The uspto actually strongly recommends all people thinking of making a patent application retain a patent attorney. But you can do it yourself.

If you decide to go direct to the us patent office yourself, then they have a powerful online system.

They have a EFS, electronic filing system for submitting patent applications. EFS can be used to submit new utility patent applications, provisional applications, and biosequence listings.

So you can do it yourself, but there's a lot of learning to be done. The us patent office makes the process as simple as they can, but it's not an inherently simple system !
